Gunnison & Hartman Rocks
Guided Mountain Biking
High Quality Desert Riding
Hartman Rocks, near Gunnison, offers some of the most under-rated, highest-quality guided desert mountain biking in Colorado. Hiding amongst the granite boulders and sage brush you’ll discover over 50 miles of beautifully-maintained flowy trails laced with slickrock features. The vertical relief is modest, less than 1200 feet from the highest and lowest parts of the zone, so it’s a great place to acclimatize enroute to Crested Butte.
In 20+ years of guiding here, we’ve never had a client walk away disappointed by these trails. Expert riders can follow our guides up and over sneaky rock moves hidden amongst the boulders, while novices love the gentle grades.
Wow, that was the coolest day of riding ever!

Not Just Biking
As an added bonus, Hartman Rocks includes some great climbing crags and bouldering areas, as well as some spectacular camping. For family camping and managing a variety of interests, Hartman’s is hard to beat. Bring the mountain bikes, dirt bikes, paddle boards, surf board, rock climbing gear, running shoes, fishing tackle, and camping gear!
Typically the trails are ready to ride early April, when we may backcountry ski in Crested Butte in the morning, and mountain bike at Hartman’s in the afternoon. April and May are the peak months here, when the temperatures are perfect, and the high-country trails remain snowcovered. Temperatures tend to climb into the 80’s and 90’s during July, August, and September, but it’s an incredibly rainy-day refuge if the mountain trails are too wet. By October and November, once snow returns, Hartman’s sees another shoulder-season resurgence of bikers looking to extend their season.
